United Dealt Transfer Setback With PL Rival Set To Complete Deal For England International ‘Next Week’

Newcastle United are poised to wrap up the signing of Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier “next week”, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Both Manchester United and Tottenham have also been heavily linked with the England international in recent months but it appears that the Magpies have beaten the pair to the fullback’s signature.

Trippier has been keen to leave Spain for quite a while, as he wants to be closer to his family, who still live in the UK. The Red Devils have been pursuing the 31-year-old for the best part of a year, with a report even last week suggesting that they hadn’t given up their pursuit of the player.

It was assumed that the arrival of Ralf Rangnick as interim manager would have cooled their interest in Trippier, but the defender was still being looked at as a potential January target.

With the right-back now looking destined to make the switch to St James’ Park, it remains to be seen whether United will pursue an alternative. Diogo Dalot has returned to prominence under Rangnick and, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka in reserve, there may no longer be a need to reinforce that area of the pitch.
