United Bid €40m For Barcelona Star!

Manchester United have reportedly made a bid of €40 million for Barcelona star Sergi Roberto.

The Reds have made three signings this summer, capturing Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic. It is known that Mourinho wants to complete a fourth signing by the end of the window, and Roberto could be the man to fit the bill. However, it is believed that United will face competition from Chelsea for the Spaniard’s signature.

It had been recognised that Mourinho wanted to sign a central midfielder this summer, so when Nemanja Matic signed last week, the thinking was that he would turn his attention to signing a winger. But it now seems as if the Portuguese manager wants further cover in both in midfield and at right-back, where Sergi Roberto is often played at Barcelona.

Serge Aurier and Fabinho have been touted for moves to Old Trafford to fill that role, but United ruled themselves out of any Aurier interest, and Monaco seem unwilling to sell any more of their players. Therefore, Sergi Roberto is a main option for Mourinho.

Barcelona are thought to be insistent on keeping Roberto at the Nou Camp, though the arrival of Nelson Semedo, who will more than likely be Barca’s first-choice right back this season, will limit Roberto’s playing time at right back. Also, with the talent in midfield already at Barcelona’s disposal and their growing interest in Paulinho, it may be that Sergi Roberto’s hopes of getting more game time in his natural midfield role will be even less likely.

Mourinho therefore sees potential in a transfer happening, but it is reported that Chelsea boss Antonio Conte also wants a versatile right-back, as well as a midfielder following Nemanja Matic’s departure.

It is believed that Sergi Roberto’s main desire is to stay at Barcelona and fight for his place, but growing interest from the Premier League and limiting game time may be factors in the 25-year-old wanting a move away.
