United Battling PL Rival For 31 Cap International Who Is Being Considered As De Gea’s Successor

Manchester United and Aston Villa are expected to battle it out for Athletic Bilbao number one Unai Simon, according to reports in the Spanish media.

The keeper, who has 31 caps for his country, was Spain’s first choice at the World Cup as they were knocked out by Morocco in the round of 16.

From the looks of things, United are considering Simon as a potential replacement for David De Gea whose contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season.

The Red Devils do have an option to automatically extend the 32-year-old’s stay for another year but, when asked about the goalkeeper’s future, manager Erik ten Hag refused to say that the player would be staying:

“Like I say [with the other players], we have options and we will do them.”

Simon is not the only keeper who has been linked with United in recent months. Porto’s Diogo Costa has also been considered, although they could face competition to sign the Portuguese international, with Chelsea having been credited with an interest in the player.
