United Are ‘Maintaining Contacts’ With 74M Target Who Has Been Left ‘Disgusted’ By Situation At His Current Team

Manchester United have been “maintaining contacts” with the representatives of Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, according to Sport.

The Catalan publication claims that the Red Devils remain interested in signing the Netherlands international, despite the player having turned down a move to Old Trafford in the summer.

United had agreed an €85m (£74m) fee for de Jong but the Dutchman was not interested in leaving Barca at the time. That could, though, be about to change.

Sport claim that the 25-year-old has been left “disgusted” with his treatment by the La Liga club since the beginning of the season. Manager Xavi has started him in only four matches, with it being suggested that he doesn’t trust de Jong enough to play in his favoured position as a holding midfield player.

It means United do have a chance of still securing de Jong in a future transfer window. Other teams, including Chelsea, have previously been mentioned as potential suitors but it appears Erik ten Hag’s team are the only ones still actively pursuing the midfielder’s signature.
