United ‘Advancing’ On Deal To Sign 60M Rated Midfield General Ahead Of Ten Hag’s Appointment

Manchester United are “advancing” on a deal to sign Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The Red Devils are keen to add more steel in central midfield, and Phillips has emerged as the number one target, ahead of West Ham’s Declan Rice and Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.

It is believed that the decision to go after Phillips has been made after United accepted that they may not be playing Champions League football next season. Participating in Europe’s top competition would have been a prerequisite for the likes of Rice and Bellingham to move to Old Trafford so Phillips has been eyed as the main alternative.

West Ham and Aston Villa are also said to be pursuing the England international, while other reports in recent weeks have mentioned Arsenal as a potential suitor.

However, United are thought to be confident of signing Phillips, if he meets the approval of prospective new head coach Erik ten Hag, who will have the final say on new signings.

Phillips (who is valued at £60m), will also need to make a big decision. The 26-year-old is a Leeds fan and moving across the divide will be particularly difficult for him.
