Man United centre-back Matthijs de Ligt has been one of the club’s standout performers this campaign.
Following the 2-1 win over Liverpool at the weekend, the Dutchman has won 37 defensive duels, which is the most of anyone in the English top flight.
Supporters on X have been quick to praise de Ligt, with many feeling that the defender doesn’t always get the credit he deserves:

De Ligt has been very consistent
Following the victory at Anfield, the likes of Harry Maguire, Amad Diallo, Casemiro and even Matheus Cunha have received plenty of plaudits.
De Ligt warrants his fair share of praise, too, due to his consistency, although you feel his performances do go under the radar at times.
Amorim’s back three system suits the Man United defender
Despite still only being 26 years of age, De Ligt has been around the block after initially making his breakthrough at Ajax. His subsequent spells at Juventus and Bayern Munich were not unqualified successes and that led to him upping sticks and moving to England.
The Netherlands international has played most of his best football over the last twelve months whilst playing in Ruben Amorim’s back three. The system seems to emphasise his strengths whilst masking some of his weaknesses. Fans will be hoping he can continue in this rich vein form in the weeks and months to come.
