Manchester United are reportedly close to agreeing a deal with Tottenham Hotspur for defender Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgium international has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford all summer, with United said to have lodged a £55m bid for him back in May.
Spurs rejected the bid in the hope that a solid World Cup would raise his price, but with just days left in the transfer window, the North London club look poised to lower their price demands from £75m to £60m.
Alderweireld’s contract at Spurs is set to expire in 2020, and there is a £25m release clause that can be activated next summer, meaning Daniel Levy will surely be desperate to cash in on the 29-year-old.
Leicester’s Harry Maguire and Barcelona’s Yerry Mina are said to be alternatives for Jose Mourinho, but the Portuguese is said to see the Spurs defender as his top choice.
With Thursday’s deadline just days away, a potential deal for Alderweireld is up in the air. Many say that a deal will be wrapped up soon, others suggest that the two clubs are miles from an agreement.
Twitter seems confident in a deal being struck though, and it’s fair to say United fans are excited about the prospect of signing a world class defender.

Wrote in February #mufc wanted Alderweireld and they tried to do an early deal for £55m in May. They’ve been linked with so many centre halves since but ‘interest’ in majority was non-existent. Was bound to drag out with Levy but Spurs’ woeful window has helped United.

I think Alderweireld, even at £60m, is a good signing for Man United. Signing another 29-year-old attacker for big money would be a bad move given the young talent in that department. But an experienced, Premier League-adjusted, top-class CB is what they need

Toby Alderweireld looks set to join Manchester United, if we managed to sign Alex Sandro we would be serious contenders for the league. #mufc

Harry Maguire is a great defender… but United defenders are young – Lindelof, Bailly. So why spend so much on one other young-ish defender, when you could get both Alderweireld and Boateng for the same price ?
