Transfer news: Manchester United agree Fred deal

Manchester United have agreed a deal to bring Fred to Old Trafford.

The Brazil international, who will travel to the World Cup this summer with his country, will join the Red Devils in a move from Shakhtar Donetsk for a reported £52 million.

The agreement brings to end an long winded saga, in which the 25-year-old was rumoured to be doing both United and rivals Manchester City.

The move is believed to have been hurried along by Brazil manager Tite, who expressed his desire the 23 players in his squad to have their future sorted before the tournament in Russia.

Fred moved to Europe in 2013 from Brazilian club Internacional and enjoyed success during five years in Ukraine – helping Shakhtar to win three Ukrainian Cups and four Ukrainian Super Cups.

He also helped Shakhtar reach the Champions League knockout stages in 2017-18,playing in wins over Manchester City and Napoli and scoring in a 2-1 win over Roma in the last 16.

Brazilian football expert Tim Vickering believes Fred could be just the player needed.

He said: “Manchester United are getting a fine player for their money. Pep Guardiola was very impressed when Fred played against Manchester City for Shakhtar in the Champions League in 2017-18.

“You can see something of a mini version of [Manchester City midfielder] Fernandinho.

“United are getting a little, stocky, left-footed midfielder who will bring real dynamism. Fred can work box to box, he has a lovely left foot, he’s improving very nicely and has picked up valuable European experience.”
