Top target downplays United transfer

Manchester United have been dealt a slight blow in their pursuit of Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld, after he suggested that he would be open to the idea of staying in North London beyond the summer.

The centre-back has been heavily linked with a move to United this summer, with Jose Mourinho looking for an experienced defender to slot into his back 4. He struggled for game time last season due to injury, but that won’t put off the Red Devils from chasing the Belgian, who’s talks over a new contract have apparently halted.

Alderweireld has just over a year left on his current contract, which includes a one-year extension option, and it is reported that the player has been in talks with Spurs over a new deal for more than a year, with an agreement still yet to be resolved.

Asked he if could stay at Tottenham beyond the summer, Alderweireld said: “Yeah, why not?

“I have two years left on my contract. I don’t know what is going to happen.”

The 29-year-old would be a welcomed signing by United fans, but a potential stumbling block for the deal may come from Spurs’ strict transfer policy – with the demanded fee said to be around £40m.
