TOP FIVE Most Expensively Assembled Squads In The Premier League

The Premier League is awash with money. Commercial revenue and the Sky TV deal mean clubs in England are very much able to delve into the transfer market and spend big.

Although it isn’t always the case that the most expensive squad wins the league, you won’t get anywhere as a team in this country if you don’t devote vast resources to transfers.

Today, we look at the Premier League sides who have spent the most on their current crop of players. The names of the clubs may not surprise you but their positions on our list might.

Press the next page as we list the five most expensively assembled teams in England (as of 11th August 2022 with data supplied by Transfermarkt.co.uk).

5) Arsenal – £474.99m

The Gunners have been playing catch-up in terms of player investment over the past two years, having invested heavily to get their squad back competing at the top end of the table.

Since the end of last season, manager Mikel Arteta has added five more players to his squad, spending nearly £120m, and he has said that there could be one or two more signings ahead of the transfer deadline.

4) Chelsea – £559.17m

The Blues’ takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital means they could very easily move up this list in the next few weeks and months, especially if the club lands a couple of marquee signings.

Marc Cucurella is the most expensive purchase so far, with a fee that could rise to a staggering £62m, and they have already added £170m in total to their squad’s value this summer.

3) Manchester United – £568.05m

It really is a damning indictment that United sit comfortably third in our rankings, considering the poor return on their investments with regards to performances on the pitch.

The Glazers are certainly more to blame for the club’s plight than anyone else, but it is their terrible player recruitment model which has been a bigger issue than their actual ability to spend money on signings.

2) Liverpool – £591.8m

While the Reds do spend their money wisely (as this previous post on net spend demonstrates), the club’s owners FSG are not afraid of investing in the squad in order to improve the club’s fortunes on the pitch.

Paying an initial £64m for Darwin Nunez has propelled them above United on this list, although the Manchester club could well overtake them again if they make some further purchases before the transfer window closes.

1) Manchester City – £862.96m

It will come as no surprise to anyone that the current Premier League champions have spent the most money on their current squad, but the fact that they have shelled out £271.16m more than their nearest rivals Liverpool is the real eye opener.

Club owner Sheikh Mansour has effectively put City in a league of their own when it comes to assembling a team, and despite Pep Guardiola’s undoubted ability as a manager, money has played a key role in their recent success.
