Top 5 Left-Backs In The Premier League This Season

Old Trafford

Left-back is something of an overlooked position in the grand scheme of things – which is a shame. Today, we’ll be dedicating a gallery to the best left-backs in the Premier League – they all deserve their fair dues.

Whittling our selections down to just five was a challenge – the likes of Ben Chilwell, Tyrick Mitchell and Rico Henry have all sadly missed out on inclusion.

Moreover, we’ve tried to add in some lesser-known talents into this list – we didn’t want it to be too predictable.

So, let’s take a look at the five best left-backs in the Premier League this season – and at who has been left back in the dressing room!

Pervis Estupinan

Brighton have been absolutely brilliant this year in the Premier League. Despite the loss of Graham Potter, they have lost no momentum whatsoever following the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi.

Much of this is due to the quality of the players at their disposal – Pervis Estupinan, their first-choice left-back, is among the Seagulls’ best players this season.

A powerful full-back who is good at both attacking and defending, the Ecuadorian international has registered six assists in all competitions this season.

Lucas Digne

Lucas Digne has been a controversial figure among pundits ever since he arrived in the Premier League. Some see him as a liability, while others believe he is a brilliant attacking threat.

While not the best defensively, Digne is one of the best attacking full-backs that the Premier League has to offer. During his time in the Premier League, the Frenchman has picked up an impressive 22 assists.

Outside of Aston Villa, the 29-year-old has also played for clubs such as Everton, PSG and Barcelona. Additionally, he has also picked up 46 caps for his native France.

Oleksandr Zinchenko

Who expected Oleksandr Zinchenko to unseat Kieran Tierney this season? We certainly didn’t – but the Ukranian has proven to be a better option in that position in almost every way.

While he lacks Tierney’s defensive ability, he more than makes up for it with his creativity, intelligent runs and explosive athleticism.

The former Manchester City full-back has played a huge role in Arsenal’s title charge – he has also been able to provide excellent cover in positions that are not natural to him.

Andy Robertson

Andy Robertson has been one of the best left-backs in the world for several years now. His work rate is the stuff of legend – additionally, he also has solid technical ability and brilliant defensive skills to back it up.

As a left-back, Robertson can do everything you would want him to. A dogged defender with extraordinary pace, it’s very difficult to consistently get around him – likewise, his intelligent runs off the ball make him a dangerous attacking presence.

Some may have expected to see Robertson at the summit of this list – however, this season, we feel there has been one left-back who has been even better than the mercurial Scot.

Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw, when playing to the peak of his powers, is one of the best left-backs in world football. An excellent crosser with underrated defensive ability, any club across the globe would be lucky to have him within their ranks.

This season, Shaw is finally beginning to reach his full potential. He has never been anything below average previously – but the 2022/23 season is, so far, his best year in the Premier League by far.

So far in the current campaign, Shaw has racked up six assists for Manchester United in all competitions, alongside a solitary goal.
