Juventus and Inter Milan have joined Roma in the battle to sign Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling, according to reports in Italy.

The 30-year-old is currently on loan with the Giallorossi but the Serie A side have yet to meet the Red Devils’ €20m ( £17m) asking price for the defender.

Roma’s highest proposal so far is said to be €15m (£12.6m), and it has left the door open for other Italian clubs to enter the race for the centre-half.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that Smalling will be returning to Old Trafford at the end of his loan spell in the summer, but the player reportedly has other ideas.

The defender is keen to get back into the England squad and is believed to be interested in a making a permanent switch to Italy in order to make it happen. Whether any concrete offers will arrive in January, it remains to be seen.
