Scott McTominay’s game time for Manchester United has been somewhat limited this season – nevertheless, the 26-year-old will have given Erik Ten Hag plenty to think about after his exceptional performance against Spain for his native Scotland during the Euro 2024 qualifiers.

McTominay was undoubtedly the man of the match for the Tartan Army against Spain, scoring both of Scotland’s goals en route to their historic victory.

He was brilliantly complimented in midfield by Celtic’s Callum McGregor, who remained in deep positions for most of the game – allowing McTominay more freedom to explore advanced areas of the pitch.

Another standout performer was Liverpool’s Andy Robertson. One moment in particular saw Robertson win the ball in the Spanish era, leading to a brilliant cutback that allowed McTominay to fire home.

The second goal was a thing of beauty. The Manchester United man fired a volley at his near post, giving Chelsea ‘keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga no chance – Scotland were two nil up and Spain couldn’t find a response.

It wasn’t just McTominay’s goals that made him a standout performer. He also did not neglect his defensive duties, especially when Scotland were hanging on at the end of the game – he put in a tireless performance in all areas of the pitch.

McTominay hasn’t had the best of seasons in the Premier League – he has only started seven of United’s games and has failed to score a goal or register an assist. Regardless, if he can replicate his international form at club level, the Scottish sensation could rejuvenate his dwindling Manchester United career.
