Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was definitely not the only poor performer in the Red Devils’ defeat to Sevilla yesterday evening but he certainly didn’t perform like an £80m signing.
For Suso’s equaliser, the 26-year-old did not appear to know where the ball had gone before it was delivered across the goal for the Spaniard to slot home.
It wasn’t only Maguire’s defending that some United fans on Twitter were criticising the centre-back for, but his leadership qualities in general:

Not a natural leader, no influence on the players at all, imagine Roy Keane out there tonight!

If a team spends £80M on a CB and a year later it’s still universally acknowledged said team still needs to bring in improvements at CB……

How he is our captain I will never know

Maguire is a squad player at best, why we paid 80 million still dazzles me

Some of the comments are a bit harsh. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, in particular, had a torrid night and was more at fault for Luuk De Jong’s winning goal, but he is still young and developing as a player.
Maguire, on the other hand, needed to marshall his defence and ensure no mistakes were made, but the backline simply switched off on two occasions, which proved fatal in the game. It was a disappointing display in one of the most important matches of the season.
