“They Don’t Have That Appeal Anymore” Glen Johnson Claims Declan Rice Could Turn Down United Switch

Former West Ham, Chelsea and Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson has questioned whether Declan Rice would be interested in a move to Manchester United.

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that the Red Devils are likely to make a formal approach for the England international next summer, but Johnson believes the Hammers midfielder may think twice about making the switch to Old Trafford:

“I don’t think Manchester United could get anyone better than Declan Rice. If he was available, I think Chelsea or Liverpool would be in front of them anyway. Those players only come around once. United have got [Donny] van de Beek or whoever and they try to sign all these players in that position for loads of money and it’s just never worked. If I was Declan I would be a bit concerned to be honest with you. I’d be thinking Manchester United aren’t the Manchester United of old.”

“There used to be a time when, anytime Manchester United came calling, you go. It was the number one place. Everyone wanted to go. But they don’t have that appeal anymore. I don’t think he’d end up there whether they want him or not. But in terms of their business, I think they should just sit tight and wait until the summer and weigh the whole situation up with everybody.”

It’s true that United are not a particularly stable club at the moment. The dressing room looks splintered, while interim boss Ralf Rangnick appears to be struggling to implement his philosophy.

However, that may change by the end of the season. If a long-term replacement for Rangnick comes in, there will be a lot more positivity surrounding the club and Rice could want to be part of the new era. While Johnson may be correct that United aren’t currently an attractive destination, things could be very different in just a few months’ time.
