The Top Five Players With The Most Own Goals In Premier League History

After listing the players who have had the most red cards of the Premier League era last week, we now turn our focus towards own goals.

Putting the ball through your own net is usually a combination of poor defending and bad luck, and the names on this list are, for the most part, decent defenders.

To separate some of them, we have had to base our rankings on appearances as well, with the fewer games played deciding the order.

Press the next page as we look at the five players with the most own goals in Premier League history.

5) Frank Sinclair (Chelsea and Leicester) – 6 Own Goals

The centre-back’s reputation for scoring unfortunate own goals stems from a notorious seven days in 1999 when he put through his own net twice in three games for Leicester.

Sinclair’s first came against Arsenal at Highbury in the last minute which gave the Gunners the three points, and the second came at home against Chelsea which saw the Foxes drop two points in the closing stages of the match.

4) Phil Jagielka (Sheffield United and Everton) – 7 Own Goals in 592 apps

The veteran defender is not generally known for the number of own goals he has conceded, unlike Sinclair, but that is probably due to his long distinguished service at the two clubs he has played for.

Jagielka is a no-nonsense centre-back and throwing yourself in front of a shot can sometimes lead to the ball going into your own net.

3) Jamie Carragher (Liverpool) – 7 Own Goals in 508 apps

The former Liverpool defender has been constantly mocked for his own goals over the past decade during his time as a pundit for Sky Sports, and rightfully so.

Carragher most memorably scored two in the same game against Manchester United back in 1999 and he will never live it down.

2) Martin Skrtel (Liverpool) – 7 Own Goals in 242 apps

It’s surprising that the Reds won any games during the mid to late 00s with both Carragher and the Slovakian playing in the same team.

Skrtel’s record for letting in own goals is quite a bit worse than Carragher’s, though, considering he played less than half the games his teammate played in the Premier League.

1) Richard Dunne (Everton, Man City, Aston Villa and QPR) – 10 Own Goals

The former Republic of Ireland international also featured on our most red cards list last week, and he is quite far ahead of the pack when it comes to own goals.

Of course, you could blame Dunne’s record on the fact that he played so many games but the likes of John Terry, who made 61 more Premier League appearances than the Irishman, only put through his own net four times.
