The Top Five Best Signings From Serie A In Premier League History

Following our look at the most successful signings from La Liga last week, this time will be focusing on players that were snapped up from Italy.

Some of the greatest talents to grace the Premier League were signed from Serie A, and credit has to go to the scouts and managers who saw something in these players that others didn’t.

The five stars on this list are all icons at their respective clubs, having spent the peak years of their career performing in the top flight of English football.

Press the next page as we look at the five best players who were signed from Serie A.

5) Mo Salah (Roma to Liverpool – £43m)

Even some United fans would begrudgingly admit that the Egyptian international will go down as one of the standout players of the last ten years to play in England.

Salah broke the Premier League record for most goals in a 38 game season (32) in his first campaign with the Reds and has two golden boots to his name in his four years at Anfield.

4) Gianfranco Zola (Parma to Chelsea – £4.5m)

The Italian magician was a talismanic figure for the Blues during his seven years at Stamford Bridge. He won the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year in his first season at the club and his standards never dropped.

Zola never won a Premier League title with Chelsea, but he still lifted numerous trophies, including two FA Cups, a League Cup, a Cup Winners Cup and the Super Cup

3) Patrick Vieira (AC Milan to Arsenal – £3.5m)

The midfielder struggled to establish himself after moving to Milan in 1995 so it was a surprise when Gunners boss Arsene Wenger snapped him up a year later.

Wenger knew what he was doing, though, with the French midfield enforcer playing a key role in two league and cup doubles, as well as the ‘Invincbles’ season of 2003/04.

2) Dennis Bergkamp (Inter Milan to Arsenal – £7.5m)

It was seen as a gamble when the Gunners shelled out a club-record fee on the Dutchman, who had not set the world alight in Italy. Fans needn’t have worried though.

After a relatively slow start, Bergkamp’s genius quickly became apparent, creating as well as scoring goals for Arsenal during one of the most successful periods of the club’s history. He spent 11 seasons in London, winning eleven major trophies.

1) Thierry Henry (Juventus to Arsenal – £11m)

Not many will dispute the Frenchman coming out on top of this list. Arsene Wenger converted the player into a striker following his arrival in England, after being used as a winger at Juve.

The decision paid off handsomely with Henry going on to score 175 Premier League goals, and sitting top of the club’s all-time scorer list with 228 in all competitions.
