The Top Five Best Signings From La Liga In Premier League History

Today, we are starting a series of posts looking at successful signings from different European leagues. This week, we are focusing on players from La Liga.

To be honest, we could have probably filled a top 20 list, rather than merely a top five, due to the sheer number of players that have made an impact in the Premier League following their arrival from Spain.

The list we have drawn up may include a couple of controversial picks but all five signings turned out to be very successful for the clubs they joined.

Press the next page as we count down the five best players who were signed from La Liga.

5) Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid to Chelsea – £32m)

There were some other names who could, arguably, have beaten the Spaniard to a place in our top five, but the striker had a big impact during his three seasons in England.

Costa scored 20 goals as the Blues won the league title in 2015, and he was just as influential when he bagged 20 more to win his second league trophy in 2017.

4) Alexis Sanchez (Barcelona to Arsenal – £31.7m)

United fans may scoff at the Chilean’s inclusion on this list, considering how poor he was for the Red Devils, but we are focusing on his initial impact after signing for Arsenal.

Sanchez scored 25 goals during his first campaign for the Gunners, and he followed that up with 17 and 30 in his two subsequent campaigns. His drop-off, unfortunately, only came after leaving the Emirates.

3) David Silva (Valencia to Manchester City – £30m)

The Spanish magician was an integral part of City’s success after the arrival of owner Sheikh Mansour. The midfielder won four league titles and ten other major trophies before leaving the Etihad last summer.

Silva was technically superb, being able to execute pinpoint accurate passes and setting up numerous goals during his time with the Citizens.

2) David De Gea (Atletico Madrid to Manchester United – £18.9m)

Although it does appear that the Spaniard’s time at Old Trafford is coming to an end, he has been an ever-present figure for United over the past ten years.

After a dodgy first season, De Gea grew into his role as the club’s number one, winning his first league title in his second campaign, and going on to feature in the PFA Team of the Year on five separate occasions.

1) Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid to Manchester City – £35m)

It’s very hard to argue against putting the City forward at the top of this list. He has simply been a phenomenon since he arrived from La Liga a decade ago.

Aguero has scored 20 or more Premier League goals in six of the ten seasons he has played in England, sitting fourth in the all-time goalscorers list.
