The Premier League’s Top Five Best Ever Argentinian Players

Following the news of Diego Maradona’s passing yesterday, we thought it would be topical to look back at the best Argentinian players who have graced the Premier League.

Manchester United have had a couple of high profile flops from the country, in Juan Sebastian Veron and Angel Di Maria, but there are a number of stars from Argentina who have gone on to excel in England.

Generally, it has been forwards, wingers and playmakers who have performed the best, although we have included a defender and a holding midfielder on this list.

Press the next page as we go through our top five players from Argentina who have played in the Premier League over the past thirty years.

5) Erik Lamela

The Tottenham winger may be a surprise inclusion on this list but it must be pointed out that he has now been in England for over seven years.

During that time, Lamela has scored 35 goals and provided 46 assists in 232 appearances for Spurs, making him one of the longest-serving players from Argentina to play in this country.

4) Javier Mascherano

Although the midfielder would go on to achieve greater success at Barcelona, the formative years of his career were spent playing in the Premier League.

After a difficult six-month spell at West Ham, where he barely played, he moved on to Liverpool where he made 94 league appearances. He helped keep clean sheets in over a third of his games demonstrating he was a very capable midfield enforcer.

3) Pablo Zabaleta

The fullback spent 12 years in total playing in the Premier League for both Manchester City and West Ham. He certainly warrants his position on this list based on his consistency playing at the highest level.

Zabaleta was a regular starter in all but two of his seasons in England, racking up 303 league appearances and winning two league titles with City.

2) Carlos Tevez

The Argentine was part of a lethal triumvirate, along with Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, which wreaked havoc on opposing defences during the 2007/08 season. He scored 19 goals that campaign helping United win the Premier League and the Champions League.

However, Tevez’s switch to Manchester City in 2009 left a sour test in the mouth. He went on to be a prolific scorer for the Citizens over four seasons before leaving for Juventus.

1) Sergio Aguero

There is no argument as to who should top this list. The striker is by far and away the most successful Argentine to play in English football, having scored 180 Premier League goals to date.

Aguero is close to surpassing Andrew Cole to go third on the list for the league’s all-time leading scorer, although he still has a way to go to match Alan Shearer’s record.
