“The game was even” insists Jose Mourinho despite his side managing only one shot on target in Sevilla

Jose Mourinho has insisted Manchester United’s clash with Sevilla on Wednesday night was an “even” affair, despite his side managing only one shot on target all night.

The Red Devils put in what can only be described as a dull performance at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, however managed to hold on for a 0-0 draw thanks to combination of poor finishing from the hosts and some heroics from keeper David De Gea.

De Gea was on hand to deny Vincenzo Montella’s side on numerous occasions as the home side managed 25 shots on-goal, eight of which were on target. The Spaniard’s best moment of the game came in second-half, when he denied Luis Muriel what looked a certain goal, batting his right hand at the ball at Muriel’s powerful header to deny to Sevilla star from point blank range.

Yet despite his side failing to provide any sort of goal-threat throughout, Jose Mourinho has insisted he felt the spoils were shared fairly, and that there is all to play for in the second leg at Old Trafford next month.

“I think the only moment where we felt relieved was in the last couple of minutes in the first half, when there were a couple of our mistakes in possession and they had a couple of good situations with two David great saves.” began Mourinho.

“Apart from that, I was never relieved. The game was even. The stats are what it is. Sometimes you have 15 shots, but 13 of them were what I call ‘statistic shots’, so I really feel that the result reflects what the game was.

De Gea denies Luis Muriel from inside the box.

“You ask me, ‘is it a good result?’. I say, it’s not good, it’s not bad. We have two legs to play and we have one match to decide everything at Old Trafford.”

The former Chelsea manager was also quick to deflect from the performance of David De Gea, hinting that his side do not rely on the Spaniard to pull them out of trouble and that United’s impressive clean-sheet record is down to a team-effort rather than one man alone.

“I think the clean sheets are because of the team and because of David [De Gea].” he said.

“But, we also kept a few clean sheets with [Sergio] Romero in goal, so I think the team even with a couple of mistakes, the team defended well and when we made the mistakes, obviously David was there. And that’s the reason why he is what he is.”
