The Four Potential Paths That Paul Pogba Could Take As His United Future Remains Far From Certain

Paul Pogba’s future at Manchester United has been the subject of numerous newspaper articles over the past eighteen months, with the Frenchman running down his contract.

Yet, with five months left until his current deal expires, we are no closer to knowing where the World Cup winner will be playing his football next season.

Pogba does have a number of options due to his availability on a free transfer, but it is fair to say, all of them are not without pitfalls.

Press the next page as we assess the four likeliest paths that the France international could take when his contract is up:

1) Moving back to familiar territory

Juventus was the place where Pogba became a true star, and he does hold a special affection for the Old Lady, but whether returning to Italy would be the best decision for him personally, it is doubtful.

The Bianconeri don’t dominate Serie A as they once did. They are more a fallen giant, akin to United, and manager Max Allegri’s restrictive system would not play to Pogba’s strengths. Even so, the pull of returning to Turin may be enough to convince him to sign for them.

2) Joining a new ‘Galactico’ era

Pogba has expressed an interest in playing for Real Madrid in the past, and it appears that, with Kylian Mbappe expected to move to the Bernabeu this summer, a new era could be dawning for the 13 time European champions.

With Erling Haaland also said to be a target, it could be a reincarnation of the ‘Galacticos’ if Pogba opts to join on a free transfer too. However, the wages and signing-on fees of all three players would probably be too much, even for Real.

3) Returning home

The 28-year-old has never played as a professional footballer in France. He came through the academy at Le Harve but he joined United before ever playing a senior game. Signing for Ligue One giants Paris Saint-Germain could, therefore, be a temptation.

Pogba would be playing alongside the likes of Neymar, Lionel Messi and other star names, and there are question marks about how he would fit in alongside those types of personalities. A switch to PSG is still a possibility though.

4) Staying and committing to a new United project

Even Pogba’s agent, Mino Raiola, has not ruled out staying at Old Trafford, but a contract has been on the table for a while and he hasn’t decided to put pen to paper.

There is some credence to the argument that Pogba may simply be waiting to see who United’s next permanent manager is. If the newly appointed boss can convince him that it is worth staying put, he may still yet sign an extension, although that looks unlikely at this stage.
