Appointing a former Liverpool manager always looked to be a recipe for disaster, and that has proven to be the case. The Spaniard has fallen out with one of his best players in Lucas Digne, leading to him being sold to Aston Villa.

On the pitch, the Toffees have played a brand of counter-attacking football that hasn’t led to good results. Only seven of Benitez’s 21 games in charge have resulted in victory, and Everton find themselves 15th in the Premier League table.
