The FIVE Most Expensive Premier League January Signings Of All Time

As the next January transfer window draws near, we have decided to take a look back at previous years to see which players top the list as the most expensive transfers among all Premier League teams.

Manchester United don’t usually make big moves in the winter market but they did make a big purchase in Bruno Fernandes earlier this year. The Portuguese international actually narrowly misses out on this list, as his initial fee was thought to be £46.5m, not including performance-related bonuses.

Fernandes is actually sixth in terms of the all-time most expensive January signings. So who are the five players who are above him on the list?

Press the next page as we go through the five biggest transfers that have taken place in January.

5) Fernando Torres (£50m)

It was a massive news story when Chelsea sealed the signing of the Spaniard from Liverpool on deadline day in 2011. The Blues felt they had landed a top-class striker from one of their rivals.

However, things didn’t really turn out that way, with Torres struggling to replicate the form he showed at Anfield, with only 45 goals in three and a half seasons with the London club.

4) Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£56m)

Arsenal broke their club record when they snapped up the Gabonese international from Borussia Dortmund at the start of 2018 and he has been more than worth his price tag.

Although Aubameyang has struggled for form at the start of this season, his 75 goals in 124 games for the Gunners kind of says it all.

3) Aymeric Laporte (£57m)

The Frenchman wasn’t that well known to Premier League supporters when he moved from Athletic Bilbao to Manchester City in 2018 but he quickly established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the league.

Laporte spent a sizeable portion of the 2019/20 season out injured with a knee injury and his absence was keenly felt as the Citizens lost the league title to Liverpool.

2) Christian Pulisic (£57.7m)

The American international was technically signed by Chelsea in the 2019 January transfer window, although he was immediately loaned back to Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of the 2018/19 campaign.

Since arriving at Stamford Bridge for the start of the 2019/20 season, Pulisic has shown glimpses of Hazard-like brilliance but his injury record means the signing can’t be seen as an unqualified success yet.

1) Virgil van Dijk (£75m)

Liverpool were originally looking to sign the Dutch powerhouse in the summer of 2017 but a tapping up controversy resulted in the deal being delayed by six months.

Van Dijk was very much worth the wait, though, and since moving to Anfield, the centre-back has helped to win four trophies, including the Premier League, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.
