The FIVE Biggest Spending European Clubs During The Summer Transfer Window

With the summer transfer window having closed last week, we have decided to look at the biggest spenders across Europe.

Considering that English sides shelled out a record £1.9 billion on transfer fees, it won’t come as a surprise to many that the Premier League dominates our top five.

What may raise an eyebrow or two, though, is that last season’s top two, Manchester City and Liverpool, don’t even make our list.

Press the next page as we count down the five biggest spending teams in Europe this summer (based on data from FootballTransfers.com).

5) Nottingham Forest – €162m

It’s quite astonishing but the Midlands club have edged out the likes of Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Bayern Munich to make it into the top five biggest spenders.

22 different players have been brought in by Forest, with the most expensive being Morgan Gibbs-White from Wolves. Whether the spending will pay off, we shall have to wait and see.

4) Tottenham – €170m

Spurs have moved up this list mainly due to the fact that they opted to turn Cristian Romero’s loan move into a permanent deal. It means that, on top of the £60m spent to bring in Richarlison from Everton, they have invested pretty heavily.

With Yves Bissouma having been signed from Brighton, and Djed Spence having been snapped up from Middlesbrough, many feel that Tottenham have made some smart additions over the summer.

3) West Ham – €182m

Not many would have predicted that the Hammers would be the third biggest spenders in the whole of Europe at the start of the summer, but the club has delved into its pockets to give David Moyes the reinforcements he needs.

Lucas Paqueta was brought in from Lyon for a record fee, while they also strengthened their forward line by snapping up highly-rated striker Gianluca Scamacca from Sassuolo.

2) Manchester United – €238m

At one point in the summer, it didn’t seem as though the Red Devils were prepared to spend sizeable sums in the transfer market to back their new manager Erik ten Hag. However, a late flurry of activity changed all that.

United shelled out the best part of £155m on Real Madrid’s Casemiro and Ajax’s Antony during the final week before the window slammed shut.

1) Chelsea – €282m

The Blues’ new owners went big by recruiting nine new players over the summer, but the decision to do so looks all the more bizarre after sacking Thomas Tuchel within days of the window closing.

Wesley Fofana was the club’s biggest expense, with the Frenchman expected to cost upwards of £75m, which is just shy of the world record for a defender.
