The Fall Of Mourinho: Stats Show How The Ex United Boss Has Lost His Way Since Arriving In England 17 Years Ago

Tottenham’s confirmation that they have sacked former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho may have come as a surprise in terms of the timing of the decision, but the Portuguese’s decline has been a long process.

During his first spell at Chelsea between 2004 and 2007, Mourinho averaged an extremely impressive 2.23 points per game (stats via Transfermarkt).

After leaving these shores for successful spells with Inter Milan and Real Madrid, his return to Chelsea in 2013 did yield another Premier League title, but his average points per match declined to 1.96.

This was the first time since Mourinho’s spell in charge of Leiria in 2001/02 that he averaged below two points per game. It is a trend, though, that continued during his time with United and latterly with Spurs.

At Old Trafford, despite some initial success in cup and European competitions, his average points per game was 1.97 and that has fallen even further at Tottenham, where it was only 1.77 before he was given his marching orders.

After being sacked by three different clubs in England, it would be a surprise if Mourinho does return to management in this country any time soon.
