The Dea Gea Problem

The Dea Gea Problem

Manchester United ended their pre-season tour of the US with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of PSG.

The Red Devils played their final game in a Nike strip, ahead of their lucrative deal with Adidas which is set to come into the fray on August 1st.

The defeat to French champions PSG may well have been a down point to the tour, but as this morning’s news round emerges, it will be the least of United’s worries. Manager Louis van Gaal has openly admitted that he has a goalkeeping problem on his hands, after what he described as an unconvincing David de Gea showing against PSG.

De Gea was substituted at half-time as United were already 2-0 down, and the Spaniard could be to blame for PSG’s first goal.

Van Gaal admitted that he has an issue to resolve, saying:

“We have a situation that is not favourable for David de Gea but neither for us and the club [Real Madrid] that maybe he wants to go to. Maybe he wants to go to.”

“I cannot say he was poor in this game, only that he made a mistake. That’s not poor.”

“Everybody can make mistakes but when a goalkeeper makes a mistake it is mostly a goal and that’s the difference.”

Manchester United seem resigned to the fact that De Gea would be moving to Madrid, but recently it felt as if the 24-year-old was set to stay on for another season with United risking losing him for nothing. However, with De Gea’s rather lax performance against PSG, it may be that he wants a move to the Spanish capital sooner rather than later, something that wouldn’t bode well with LvG.

United have plenty of back-up in the goalkeeping ranks, but you’d have to think if De Gea left then the Red Devils would have to go out and replace him suitably. Even with the likes of Victor Valdes and new Argentine signing Sergio Romero as back-up, it still feels as if United would massively miss the Spaniard.

So as the new season looms, United look to have taken no steps forward in the defensive region. Darmian has been a great addition, but with no new centre back and no clues on the De Gea situation, it looks like things are set to become interesting in the next few weeks.
