‘I Think He’s A Fantastic Player’ Manchester United Legend Discusses Club’s Performance In The Transfer Market

Manchester United icon Teddy Sheringham was recently interviewed by Lord Ping – in the interview, he gave his thoughts on the Red Devils’ performance in the summer transfer window.

He is a fan of Mason Mount’s and is pleased that the club have sealed a deal for the Chelsea academy graduate – he had some less complimentary things to say about the acquisition of Jonny Evans, however.

Moreover, he also pulled back the curtain on his time at United under Alex Ferguson – he even revealed what it was like to be on the receiving end of Fergie’s dreaded ‘hairdryer treatment’.

What did Teddy Sheringham have to say regarding the incomings and outgoings at Manchester United?

On United’s transfer business so far, Sheringham said: “I like Mason Mount. I think that is a good acquisition for the club. Ten Hag knows Onana well, so I presume he’s going to be good.

“I’ve heard a lot of positive comments from people at the club about his ability and he is very confident with the ball at his feet. If Ten Hag was happy to let David De Gea leave the club, then you have to believe that United are upgrading in the goalkeeper position.

“Jonny Evans. I think he’s a fantastic player, but I see that as quite a strange acquisition. I don’t really understand that one. He’s 35-years-old and I suppose he is being signed as cover, if needed. He’s a quality player. He could step in and come back to Old Trafford and make an impact when the team needs him to do so.”

What did Sheringham reveal about working under Alex Ferguson?

On Ferguson, Sheringham had this to say: “Sir Alex never addressed his squad with our objectives for the season ahead, there wasn’t anything like that. I remember we always used to talk about our objectives for next season before we went on holidays.

“If we won a trophy or two, we would come back and he would say, ‘Make sure you don’t rest on your laurels. I want you coming back firing on all cylinders to become champions. We’re Manchester United and this is what we expect. Don’t take six games to find your fitness because the title could be over by then – be ready to go.'”

When asked if he ever suffered the wrath of Fergie’s ‘hairdryer treatment’, Sheringham said: “I have never been on the receiving end of that myself, but I have had close encounters with the hairdryer. I used to sit between Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt in the United dressing room and I can remember sitting there once when they got it – I’ve seen it in full flow.

“I never actually copped one myself, but I definitely experienced some collateral damage, a little bit of spittle every now and again.”
