Staying Or Leaving? 8 United Players Whose Contracts Expire Within The Next 15 Months

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the contracts of Manchester United players in recent weeks. Eric Bailly and Edinson Cavani, in particular, have been the subject of a lot of stories.

Unless contract extensions are handed out, there are also quite a few other players who could be heading for the exit door very soon.

There are eight United stars whose current deals will end either this summer or at the end of the next season so we have decided to look at their situations.

Press the next page as we deliver our verdict on the futures of several United players.

Edinson Cavani

United do have the option to extend his stay for another year and based on his first season at the club, they may well be keen to keep him.

However, Cavani has been flirting with a return to South America, with Boca Juniors said to be interested. If he wants to leave, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unlikely to stand in his way. Verdict – Leaving.

Juan Mata

Much like with Cavani, the Red Devils can trigger an option to keep the Spaniard but his lack of game time this season suggests that he is no longer part of Solskjaer’s first-team plans.

Mata has been linked with a move back to Spain, but there are also teams in Italy who are believed to be interested in him. Verdict – Leaving.

Sergio Romero

The Argentinian international has been trying to leave Old Trafford since the summer and he will undoubtedly be given his wish at the end of the season.

Romero has reportedly gone as far as to put his house up for sale, and it is almost guaranteed we won’t see him in a United shirt again. Verdict – Leaving.

Lee Grant

This one is slightly harder to call. The keeper maybe 38 years of age but most Premier League teams have a veteran number three on their books.

Chelsea have Willy Caballero who is 39, while Manchester City have Scott Carson who is 35. You wouldn’t bet against Grant remaining at United for another year. Verdict – Staying.

Jesse Lingard

United were wise not to put a purchase option in the forward’s loan move to West Ham. Five goals and three assists in seven appearances is a very impressive run of form.

Whether it will be enough for Lingard to get a new contract, or whether it will simply push up his price, we shall see. Verdict – Leaving.

Paul Pogba

There have been no reports about contract talks, despite claims from Solksjaer that the Frenchman is committed to the club.

A departure this summer may be dependent on who is willing to pay up but United will not want Pogba to leave on a free transfer so they may have to take a hit on his transfer fee. Verdict – Leaving.

Eric Bailly

The Ivorian appears to be unsettled at Old Trafford, with a friend recently telling a news outlet that he doesn’t feel respected by the club.

On top of reports that Bailly was unhappy about being left out against AC Milan last week, all the signs point towards a summer exit. Verdict – Leaving.

Axel Tuanzebe

United do have an option to extend the 23-year-old’s contract for another year and it is very likely that they will trigger it despite the defender barely featuring this season.

Tuanzebe is still young for a defender and Solskjaer will likely give him more time to develop over the next couple of seasons. Verdict – Staying.
