Stats Show Zlatan Has Too Much Goal Scoring Responsibility On Him – But Who Should United Sign? Lukaku, Griezmann, Muller?

Clearly the signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been a successful one with the Swedish hitman registering 27 goals in the 41 appearances he has made for Man United so far. The problem however has been the lack of goals from the rest of the team.

Midfielder Juan Mata comes next in team scoring with 10 goals so far but the Spanish international is the only other player to hit double figures.

Marcus Rashford has had a decent season but has not had much luck in front of goal as the youngster has found it much harder to bulge the net this season only scoring 7 times so far this campaign. Anthony Martial, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba have all also only managed 7 goals each so far when all three are potentially capable of scoring more particularly when you factor in the positions they play in the cases of Mkhitaryan and Martial and the amount of games played by Pogba.

Next come Jesse Lingard and captain Wayne Rooney with 5 goals each. Again both would be expected to produce more as Lingard had showed such promise in the previous season and Rooney’s lack of goals only suggests that he is not really enjoying his lack of playing time and that is causing him to not produce as he has in the past.

Aside from Marouane Fellaini with 3 goals and Chris Smalling with 2 goals no other United player has managed more than a single goal so when you look at their goal difference of only 19 goals which is very low for a Manchester United team it is clear that the team need to score more. Jose Mourinho has been playing a pretty attacking brand of football so you cannot say that the manager is to blame for playing a defensive style of football.

So it is more than apparent that United need to add goals. They could hope for the existing squad to deliver the goals they are capable of but with Zlatan the age he is, it is clear that another striker is a absolute must signing this summer.

Some of the names leading the European scoring charts are: Atletico’s Antoine Griezmann, Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski, Everton’s Romelu Lukaku, Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Torino’s Andrea Belotti, Roma’s Edin Dzeko, Atletico’s Antoine Griezmann and PSG’s Edinson Cavani. While some of these players like Robert Lewandowski, Andrea Belotti and Edin Dzeko are unlikely to be available or would not be wanted by Jose Mourinho, there are other forwards who could be in the frame like Bayern’s Thomas Muller and Spurs’ Harry Kane or even Neymar who Jose Mourinho dismissed reports linking the team with.

Which ever way United and their boss decide to go it would seem wise to show patience with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford as both are young and have a huge upside. Jose Mourinho has indicated in recent interviews that he feels the team are a work in progress and that it may take some time before they are ready to produce the kind of form needed to challenge for major honours year in and year out so maybe he is prepared to stick with what he has for next season until the right striker becomes available. This might well be the case given that reports lately suggest Antoine Griezmann may be staying in Spain at least for antother season.
