Souness Says United’s £130m Outlay Will Be For Nothing If They Don’t Fix Key Problem

TV pundit Graeme Souness thinks Manchester United must fix their midfield or their £130m outlay on Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be a waste.

Despite having spent a sizeable amount on fixing their defensive issues, the Red Devils have still conceded six goals in six league games this season, and Souness believes this is because they are not getting enough protection in the middle of the park:

“Until they fix it (their midfield), United’s back five will be fire-fighting. They can spend massively on Maguire, give Victor Lindelof a new five-year deal, De Gea four more lucrative years and sign Wan-Bissaka for £50million and it will all be money down the drain.”

Scott McTominay has certainly played well at the start of the season, but Paul Pogba has never looked completely comfortable playing in a deeper role for United.

With the Frenchman out, neither Nemanja Matic nor Fred have impressed either, with the pair not having the energy to cover the ground and make crucial tackles and interceptions.

The lack of a screen in front of the back four has definitely played a role in the club’s poor form at the start of this campaign, but the lack of goals is a bigger concern. United have scored just four league goals since the opening day win against Chelsea.
