AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud has turned down a move to Manchester United due to a “sizeable tax bill” according to ESPN.

The Frenchman has six months left on his contract with the Serie A champions but, if he had decided to leave in January, before his current deal expires, he would have owed the Italian authorities a significant sum of money.

Milan are keen to keep hold of Giroud for an additional season anyway so the likelihood is that the former Chelsea and Arsenal player will ultimately put pen to paper on an extension with the Rossoneri.

United have already turned their attentions elsewhere. They have had exploratory talks about signing Burnley’s Wout Weghorst on a temporary basis, but there is an added complication in that he is currently on loan at Besiktas, who have an option to buy.

ESPN report that Barcelona’s Memphis Depay, Atletico Madrid pair Alvaro Morata & Joao Felix, as well as Al Nassr’s Vincent Aboubakar, are also being considered as targets.
