‘Should’ve Been Bought When Arsenal Was Selling’ ‘Not The Right Character To Have’ United Fans Discuss De Gea’s Potential Replacement

Manchester United may consider a bid for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez next summer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Argentinian international was integral to his team winning the World Cup, and Romano says the 30-year-old could be pursued by the Red Devils and even Chelsea at the end of the season:

“Emiliano Martinez could be a part of a domino effect with goalkeepers next summer, perhaps with Chelsea or Manchester United, let’s see.”

Martinez joined Villa from Arsenal for £20m two and a half years ago, and he has impressed during his time at the Midlands club. However, some fans on Twitter were not happy with his antics in the penalty shootout against France at the weekend, and they have questioned whether he would be the right signing:

It does seem as though United will be in the market for a new number one at the end of the season. Recent reports have suggested that manager Erik ten Hag may opt against triggering the option to keep David De Gea for another year.

If that were to happen then recruiting an experienced keeper to replace the Spaniard would be required. Martinez would undoubtedly come under consideration, although other names (such as Porto’s Diogo Costa) are also likely to be in the frame.
