Should David De Gea Be Given A New Contract At Manchester United?

David De Gea has been one of the best goalkeepers at Manchester United in the Premier League era. He is among the company of Peter Schmeichel and Edwin Van Der Sar – but is it time for the Red Devils to move on?

With Dea Gea’s contract set to expire in the summer, several fans and pundits have been called for United to replace him between the sticks. His playing style is somewhat old-fashioned in the modern era – while his reflexes are often spell-binding, he struggles with his distribution and he is not authoritative enough over his area.

Sadly, De Gea’s form has been spotty at best since 2018. In the 2018 World Cup, he was singled out for his poor performances on the international stage – including a howler in the group stage against Portugal. From that moment on, his confidence has never been the same.

Even his best attribute, shot-stopping, has been questioned in recent years. In United’s most recent game, where they took on West Ham, the Spaniard made a terrible error as he allowed Said Benrahma’s shot to trickle through his fingers. It was not the first time in the last few months that De Gea’s abilities have come under scrutiny.

De Gea’s best years at the club spanned from 2014 to 2017. During that period, he was arguably the best goalkeeper in the world – he routinely pulled off jaw-dropping saves, often looking unbeatable.

De Gea leaving the club would be a sad moment – he has created countless unforgettable memories during his time at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, the modern game is a cruel one – there can be no time for sentimentality.
