Shearer Questions United’s Training Methods After Striker Puts In Another Poor Display

TV pundit Alan Shearer has questioned whether Manchester United are actually trying to improve their attacking play in training following Marcus Rashford’s poor performance against Newcastle.

Shearer says he criticised Rashford for making the exact same mistakes in the 2-0 defeat to West Ham last month and doesn’t believe any coach has told him what he has been doing wrong playing as the number nine:

“I wonder whether anyone is actually saying anything to him [Rashford]. [He’s] not moving in the box. He’s making it far too easy for defenders. It has to be a very frustrating time for him because that team is awful.”

Rashford was an isolated figure up front versus the Magpies but he is not leading the line as he should be as the lone striker. The 21-year-old is not holding up the ball or making the right runs into the box.

Some of that is likely down to a lack of confidence. Since his brace against Chelsea on the opening day of the season, the striker has scored just one penalty. As Shearer says, though, even if he isn’t in top form, he should be getting into the right positions to score.
