Shearer Lists Two United Players In His Top Five Bargains Of The Premier League Era

You don’t always need to splash the cash to get yourself a top-drawer talent. Some of the best players in Premier League history have been bought for very modest sums.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer was actually signed for a British record £15m back in 1996 so he, himself, was never described as a bargain.

However, in a recent article, the former player turned pundit took a look back at the players who have made the most impact during the Premier League era, despite being signed for pretty low transfer fees.

Press the next page as we go through the Premier League legend’s top five bargains of the last three decades.

5) Kolo Toure (Arsenal) – £150,000

Plucked from obscurity by the Gunners, he arrived in England back in February 2002 with no one knowing who he was. Just two years later, he would be starring for a team that went unbeaten for an entire season.

Toure also had an excellent career with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Celtic and the fact he cost so little makes it all the more remarkable.

4) Seamus Coleman (Everton) – £60,000

Like Toure, the right-back was picked from obscurity, in his case Irish football, moving to Goodison Park from Sligo Rovers in the summer of 2009.

Coleman has subsequently gone on to rack up 342 appearances for Everton over the past 12 years, as well as captaining his country.

3) Peter Schmeichel (Manchester United) – £505,000

The Great Dane had won four Danish Superliga titles in five years with Brondby between 1987 and 1991, and he was a Danish international, so the keeper wasn’t an unknown quantity by any stretch of the imagination.

However, Schmeichel went on to greater heights when he made the switch to Old Trafford, bagging himself 15 major trophies over an eight-year period.

2) Eric Cantona (Manchester United) – £1.2m

Leeds fans were angered when their club opted to sell the Frenchman to a fierce rival for such a small transfer fee and it proved to be a huge error.

At United, Cantona’s arrogance and strong mentality helped forge United into title winners. His influence was key in the club winning their first four Premier League trophies.

1) Jamie Vardy (Leicester) – £1m

The Foxes could not have predicted how successful this signing would turn out to be when they snapped up the striker from Fleetwood Town in 2012.

Vardy was integral to Leicester’s stunning league title win in 2016, but he remains a potent finisher even five years later, having scored 115 goals in the top flight of English football.
