Manchester United full back Sergio Reguilon has spoken on his delight at joining the club in the summer transfer window in a recent interview.
He has said that the decision to join the Red Devils was ‘very easy’ and that he and head coach Erik Ten Hag ‘share the same philosophy’ on how they believe football should be played.
Ten Hag has become known for his intense, high-pressing style of play – Reguilon understands this and is willing to do what he can to make the Dutchman’s intricate system work seamlessly.
Reguilon joined United on a season-long loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur on September 1 – so far, he has made two appearances in the Premier League for the club.
What did Sergio Reguilon say regarding his move to Manchester United?
Quoted by Fabrizio Romano on his official X account, Reguilon said: “[Erik] Ten Hag wanted me to come and I also wanted to come here.
“It was very easy. We talked about what he expected from his left back. We share the same philosophy. He likes workers hard working and I like to work hard.”
How has the addition of Sergio Reguilon improved the squad?
Currently, United have three first-team left backs in the squad – aside from Regulion, they also have Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. However, the latter two players are currently out with injuries – Malacia is expected to be back towards the end of September, while Shaw will return in October.
As such, Reguilon has been able to fill this gap in the squad – however, he is much more than just a stop gap. With electric pace and wonderful ability on the ball, he brings something to the table that Shaw and Malacia cannot.
While Shaw and Malacia are both defensively competent, they aren’t the best when it comes to the final third. Shaw has good movement and decent crossing ability, but he lacks Reguilon’s explosiveness.
In this sense, Reguilon is United’s only true attacking full back. His arrival brings a new dimension to the team, though he can be left wanting in the defensive department from time to time.
