Savage: Nemanja Matic is the signing of the season

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has been hailed as the signing of the season by pundit Robbie Savage. The Serbian joined United in the summer from Chelsea for a fee of around £40m. At the time of signing, many criticised the high fee for the 29-year-old, others noted that the Blues were allowing one of their best players to leave for a title rival.

It is safe to say that Matic has well and truly hit the ground running under his former manager Jose Mourinho, and put in a number of top displays that have allowed his new side to sit joint top of the Premier League table. With several MOTM performances, the Serb has been hailed as one of the signings of the season by BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage.

Former United youth player Savage says that he has been impressed by Matic’s start to the season with the Reds, but admits he is baffled as to why Chelsea allowed him to leave.

Savage told Goal: “The more and more I look at it, it looks like a bargain.”

“Considering his experience and what he’s won in the game.”

“I think the best piece of business in the window is Matic to Manchester United. That has allowed [Paul] Pogba to go and produce the displays he’s doing.”

“United to get Matic to allow Pogba to play as well as he’s playing is a stroke of genius.”

But Sav admitted he was surprised that the Blues allowed the defensive midfielder to leave the club, especially to a rival side.

He explained: “I’ve got no idea at all.”

“You can see what he’s added to Manchester United already. He’s a wonderful player so I’m surprised Chelsea let him go.”

Matic played a huge part in United’s 4-0 win over Everton, being awarded as Man of The Match in the game.
