Rooney backs Ronaldo for Champions League glory

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has backed Cristiano Ronaldo to lift the Champions League with Juventus this season.

Ronaldo moved to Turin earlier this summer in an £89 million move from Real Madrid, bringing to an end a hugely successful nine year spell at the Bernabeu.

The Portuguese international scored an astonishing 450 times in just 438 appearances during his time in Spain, helping Madrid win two La Liga and four Champions League trophies.

And Rooney has backed his former team-mate to emulate those achievements with Juventus.

“For any team that signs Cristiano Ronaldo the excitement will be massive,” Rooney said speaking with CNN.

“I think for the Italian league it’s a huge bonus to get him playing in their league.

“I’m sure he’ll do what he’s done for the last 10 years – he’ll bring goals. I fancy Juventus to win the Champions League this year solely for the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo’s gone there.”

Rooney, who moved to MLS side DC United this summer, spent five seasons playing alongside Ronaldo at Old Trafford between 2004-2009, winning three Premier League titles.

“He works hard and he’s always got his family around him,” Rooney continued.

“He deserves all the credit he gets because he’s put that effort in to be at the top and score so many goals.”
