Romano Reveals Latest Darwin Nunez Development That Could Prove Important In United’s Bid To Sign 68M Striker

Darwin Nunez’s decision to switch agents will accelerate the Uruguayan’s departure from Benfica this summer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian journalist says that the forward is now working with a close associate of Jorge Mendes, and that indicates the player is looking to press ahead with a “big move” in the coming weeks:

“It will depend on the price because, for example, in January on deadline day, West Ham made a proposal of €45m (£39m) and it was turned down because Benfica wanted €55m (£47m). Now I think with €55m, you are absolutely not buying him. So, what is needed is around €75-80m (£64m-£68m) million for Darwin Nunez, to open negotiations with Benfica. He now has a new agent that is really close to Jorge Mendes so it’s gonna change the future of the player. So, everything is absolutely open but I’m sure Darwin will be ready to leave Benfica in the summer and make a big move in the summer.”

Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle have all been linked with Nunez, in addition to West Ham, and, with the player in high demand, it’s likely that Benfica will receive bids in the region of €80m (£68m) for the striker.

The big question for United is whether the 22-year-old would be prepared to move to Old Trafford without Champions League football. The Manchester club are keen to pull out all the stops to sign a talented young forward but their absence from Europe’s top competition could still prove to be a major obstacle to any deal going ahead.
