Manchester United Class of ’92 graduate Robbie Savage has expressed his belief that England should not be considered betting favourites ahead of their Euro 2024 campaign.
He says that the starting XI for the Three Lions lacks ‘winners’, using Marc Guehi, Harry Kane and Keiran Trippier – all of whom have won major trophies – as examples of this.
Additionally, Savage also used the fact that Premier League teams have underperformed in European competitions this season to bolster his argument. No English teams managed to make it into the final of any of the three major continental competitions in 2023/24, despite Manchester City winning the Champions League (and the treble) in 2022/23.
Instead, Savage thinks that Germany should be considered the favourites to win Euro 2024, citing their wealth of talented youngsters and their home advantage.
England’s first group game will take place tonight at 8pm GMT against Serbia – following this, they will play Denmark on June 20 and Slovenia on June 25.
What did Manchester United academy graduate Robbie Savage say about England’s chances in the Euros?
Speaking to Planet Sport Bet, Savage said: “England are favourites for the tournament in some people’s eyes, but I don’t understand that. How many winners are there in the starting XI? Kyle Walker and John Stones have won trophies but Marc Guehi and Kieran Trippier haven’t.
“When you look at the midfield, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden have but Declan Rice hasn’t. If he starts Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane, those two haven’t won trophies, neither have Bukayo Saka or Cole Palmer.
“I don’t understand why [England are] favourites. The Premier League teams haven’t done well in Europe this season whereas the Bundesliga teams have done unbelievably well. Germany are on home soil, their players are in form and they’ve got some of the best young players in Europe. I make Germany the favourites.”
