We asked United fans which of the five new signings will be most successful for Ole Gunnar Solksjaer and the results may surprise you.
Manchester United did as they have so often done under Chief Executive Ed Woodward and left the bulk of their transfer activity until the 11th hour as the club had only signed one player ahead of deadline day.
A little surprisingly coming first is Donny van de Beek who received 40% of fans votes. The former Ajax midfielder who arrived at Old Trafford for a fee of £40million has not been used as a starter much so far but his importance is not lost on fans it would appear. The Dutchman showed his worth vs RP Leipzig in the Champions League this week as he started in place of Bruno Fernandes and helped lay the foundation for United’s impressive win as he made sure the Red-Devils went into half-time with a 1-0 lead. Van de Beek produced a highly disciplined defensive display as United held off the German team with a military like display while they dominated possession. More is to come in attack from the Dutch midfielder but crucially without Bruno starting in the side United did not lower their level of play.
Coming second in the poll with 26% of the vote is Brazilian international Alex Telles who joined from Porto for a fee of £13.5million. The left-back who will provide some crucial competition for Luke Shaw and showed he is an excellent crosser of the ball on his United debut in the 2-1 away win in the Champions League vs PSG. For the fee paid for the Brazilian he certainly looks like a bargain.
Coming third in the poll with 18% of the vote is free-agent signing Edinson Cavani who joined United on deadline day. The Uruguayan hitman will provide valuable experience to the United attack and is a bona-fide scorer as his impressive goal record in Europe indicates. Cavani should be able to teach Martial, Rashford and Greenwood a thing or two as well as providing invaluable depth for manager Solksjaer.
In 4th position in the poll with 9% comes Amad Traore. The Ivorian winger was signed on deadline day for an undisclosed fee from Serie A club Atalanta. Traore is apparently very talented but the fans will have to wait to see the Ivorian in a United shirt for themselves due to work permit complications. The wideman will not move to Old Trafford until January 2021.
Coming last but not least is Uruguayan forward Facundo Pellistri with 6% of the vote. The forward joins United from Montevideo sports club Penarol for a fee of £10million and the player is yet to make his debut for United after his deadline day move but will provide valuable depth on the wings for the club.
So the signings may have taken some time but it is hard to argue with the transfer business done in 2020 when you consider the addition of Bruno Fernandes who joined in the January 2020 window. United have a much improved squad and the recent CL results beating both PSG and RP Leipzig show that the Red-Devils under Ole are a team on the up.
