Report: Mourinho Looking To Do Business With Real Madrid

Manchester United don’t seem to need to stop spending big despite bringing in Alexis Sanchez. If rumors are true, Mourinho could place a bid for Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

The 23-year-old is having a hard time finding a place in Zidane’s match day squads as he lacks the experience when compared to his direct competition. He has the skill but lacks a bit of consistency, consistency you get by playing more. It’s a complicated situation given the fact that Real Madrid have Modric, Kroos, Isco and Casemiro. There’s also Asensio who is homegrown and is in excellent form.

Kovacic is the kind of player who needs momentum which he would surely get if he was to get a decent run in the side. That does not seem to be forthcoming from Madrid’s boss who himself is under severe pressure having been knocked out of the Copa Del Rei by lower league opposition plus Madrid sit 19 points behind Barca in 4th place in La Liga. You can understand Zidane using his experienced players given the situation but for Kovacic’s development he needs a special kind of manager just like Mourinho.

With that in mind, it would be really nice to see Manchester United get a hold of the Croatian international. Right now, the Old Trafford side does not have anyone who has the 23-year-old’s profile. He is a combination between Mata and Herrera basically, meaning he could play in front of Matic and Pogba. He is faster than Mata and has more flair than Herrera. He is young and eager to prove himself so therefore there is unlikely to be a downside to his transfer.

According to the Mirror, Mourinho has always had his eye on Kovacic so it would not be that big of a surprise to see an attempt to bring him to the Premier League. The Croatia international cost Real Madrid around £27.90m back in 2015.

Normally you would expect his price to be higher but that might not be the case given his situation. The only problem with this deal is that Zidane is close to being asked to step down as manager. Kovacic might want to wait until someone new is appointed and decide after if he is willing to move or not. He is under contract until 2021 so there’s no pressure.
