Former Manchester United star Angel Di Maria is set to become a free agent in the summer when his contract at Juventus expires, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

The Old Lady reportedly offered Di Maria a new contract, but talks have since broken down – due to this, he will play his football elsewhere in 2023/24.

While several clubs in Saudi Arabia are believed to have approached the Argentinian dynamo, he is keen to play European football next season. As such, he will bide his time to see if a club in the Champions League puts an offer forth.

In Romano’s tweet, he wrote: “Ángel Di Maria will assess his options in the next weeks, he’s gonna look for new club as talks with Juventus have broken down recently — he’s expected to leave as free agent. Saudi clubs have approached Di Maria; his priority remains European football.”

Di Maria’s first stint at United was ultimately underwhelming – now that he is past his best, there is nothing to suggest that a return to Old Trafford would be any different.

The Argentinian winger is a fine player, but he is not well-suited to the hustle and bustle of the Premier League. He does not react well to hard knocks, which is a mindset that you cannot afford to have in England’s top flight.

He also does not fit Erik Ten Hag’s high-pressing style. Di Maria has all the talent in the world, but his work rate is questionable at times – something that Ten Hag would not stand for.
