Record Breaking Manchester United Legend Could Leave Club For Free In The Summer

David De Gea will go down as one of the best goalkeepers in Manchester United history. A miraculous shot stopper, he has been at the club since 2011 – he was initially snapped up from Atletico Madrid by none other than Alex Ferguson.

He also broke a record on Sunday, when he made his 400th Manchester United appearance. He became the first non-British player in the Premier League to have made 400 starts for the same club. Additionally, he also drew level with Peter Schmeichel for United’s record number of clean sheets.

Despite these lofty accolades, De Gea could leave United on a free in the summer, when his contract expires. It’s not unfeasible – the Spaniard is 32, with notable gaps in his game. United may consider investing in a younger, more well rounded goalkeeper for next season.

United could also turn to a ‘keeper already at the club. Dean Henderson is having a solid campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest, despite recently being dropped in favour of former Real Madrid and PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas. Red Devils fans are waiting for Henderson to finally get a proper chance between the sticks for United – could it come sooner rather than later?

However, for now, it looks unlikely. United have the option to extend De Gea’s contract by an additional year, which would allow it to last until the summer of 2024.

As such, United may be in the hunt for a new ‘keeper soon – but they aren’t likely to appoint a replacement for De Gea until the end of next season.
