Rashford proves there is little to worry about without Ibrahimovic

Manchester United’s win over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday was momentous on so many different levels. Not only did it add some spice to the Premier League title win, with Tottenham having closed the gap at the top to four points, but it saw Jose Mourinho get one over on his old club – having already lost to the Blues twice this season.

Furthermore, the win saw Mourinho’s side at a level we have not seen since the opening weeks of his first Premier League season in the hot seat at Old Trafford. The hosts looked comfortable, confident and in control throughout the 2-0 win, with Ander Herrara deserving significant praise for his efforts against Chelsea star man Eden Hazard, who was kept quiet throughout.

Whilst the Spanish midfielder was rightly given the accolade of Man of the Match, the encounter marked a significant moment in the progression of last year’s breakthrough sensation Marcus Rashford.

The England international, who has been in and out of Jose Mourinho’s side all season, hadn’t scored a Premier League goal since September ahead of last week’s win at Sunderland when here rounded off the afternoon bagging the third goal.

However, the youngster, who was preferred to a ‘tired’ Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Sunday afternoon, got the hosts off to the ideal start with his goal inside ten minutes. Rashford’s strike, his ninth in all competitions so far this season, seemed to settle those in red behind him and they took control from that moment on.

The fact that no handball was given against Herrera before he played the striker through is fortuitous, although there is nothing Rashford could have changed about that and he still had a lot to do in order to keep his calm and finish smartly past Asmir Begovic in the Chelsea goal.

With his future having been questioned earlier in the season, a loan move this summer was an idea being thrown around in the press, the 19-year-old stepped up to the plate and proved to his manager and the fans watching on that he has exactly what it takes to lead the line at Manchester United.

Not only did he make his mark with a goal but Rashford was a menace to the Chelsea back line from kick-off to when he was brought off to a hard earned standing ovation with seven minutes to go.

With rumours circulating that Ibrahimovic could be off this summer, the starlets performance could well have calmed nerves over who would be that talisman up top next season.
