Rashford Hopes To Thrive Off Lukaku

We all know that Marcus Rashford has a bright future ahead of him. The 19-year-old burst onto the scenes under Louis van Gaal two season’s ago and has been touted for stardom ever since. Rashford is by no means the finished article, so whilst everyone at Manchester United hopes to see him leading the line in years to come, it is surely too early for the youngster to carry the squad at this time.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival last summer seemed like the perfect move in order for Rashford to develop into his full potential. Zlatan would lead the line for two years taking Rashford under his wing, then when the time is right, the lad would step up and hope to replicate the form we saw Wayne Rooney have over his 13 year tenure at the club. That was the vision anyway, but with Zlatan’s departure as well as Wayne Rooney, it left many worried that the teenager would not have anyone up front to help mentor him.

With Romelu Lukaku signing for United in a £90m deal earlier in the month, perhaps many would view this as a step in the wrong direction for Rashford’s development. At 24, Lukaku has many years left at the top of his game – it’s fair to say even he himself isn’t at the prime age for his position.

However, one man is happy with the signing of Lukaku, and is keen to form a formidable striking partnership wih the Belgian – Marcus Rashford himself.

“He’s gone through a phase in his career now and he’s coming up to his prime years and he has been scoring a lot of goals for the last three or four years,” Rashford said on Lukaku.

“I think he is in a good place in his career and he has probably come here at the right time. I think what I can learn from him and what we can learn from each other is when we play together it is getting the relationship off the pitch and bringing it on to the pitch.”

“We are still getting to know each other off the pitch and that’s what a team is, we have to get to know each other on and off the pitch.”

Rashford scored 11 goals for Manchester United last season, playing second fiddle up front to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. But Rashford says he learned a lot from the veteran striker.

“There was a lot to learn from him, not only from the football side of things but just his mentality, the way he trains, the way he prepares for the games. They are the main things that I took,” Rashford said.

“It is difficult because we have got different playing styles so to take a lot from his actual game is difficult, so I had to look outside of just football itself and try to take things from his personality and what makes him great.” [Quotes via Sky Sports]

Mourinho has hinted at possibly playing two up front next season, if so, United fans can look forward to Rashford thriving up top.
