Premier League stopper is perfect fit for long-term Man United plan

Manchester United have endured a transitional debut season under the guidance of Jose Mourinho, with the Red Devils battling it out in the final few weeks to secure a return to the Champions League- either via a top-four finish or through Europa League success.

A major squad overhaul is likely to occur at Old Trafford this summer though with veterans Michael Carrick, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all set to leave, whilst others like David De Gea continue to attract a wealth of interest.

Real Madrid have made it abundantly clear that they intend to sign De Gea from the Red Devils this summer and Mourinho seems accepting to a transfer, as he doesn’t want to keep a player around who doesn’t want to be there and he can earn a high price for the Spaniard’s signature.

Replacing De Gea certainly wouldn’t be an easy task though and the likelihood is they’d struggle to fix things fully in the close season, which is why making a move for Leicester City’s heroic stopper Kasper Schmeichel would be a wise move.

At 30-years-old, the son of Manchester United legend Peter has excelled with the Foxes during the past two seasons and was the stand-out performer in the club’s run to the Champions League quarter-finals this season.

The Foxes have struggled domestically though and the defending Premier League champions are likely to undergo a wealth of changes this summer, which could see star-names like Riyhad Mahrez, Schmeichel and Jamie Vardy all move on.

Reports suggest that Schmeichel is top of Manchester United’s list of replacements for De Gea and Mourinho’s side wouldn’t have to worry about the veteran taking time to settle in at the club, as he’s already well accustomed to life in the Premier League.

Schmeichel’s signature would also be significantly less expensive than Jan Oblak’s from Atletico Madrid and it would allow United to establish a long-term plan to secure the services of Gianluigi Donnarumma in the future, as the teenager is unlikely to stay at AC Milan.

His agent Mino Raiola already has strong relationships with Manchester United and is well known for always trying to secure a multi-million pound move for his clients, which makes it highly likely the 18-year-old Italian will remain at the San Siro.

In a few years time, when Schmeichel is around 32 or 33, a move for Donnarumma could materialise and give Manchester United the top-class goalkeeper they’re seeking for the next decade, as well as helping them add to their list of superstars.

For that reason, Schmeichel can be seen as a stop-gap in the search for the ideal De Gea replacement but it’s not like United would be settling for an average goalkeeper, as Schmeichel is top quality and should be easy to lure to the club due to his father’s history at Old Trafford.
