Premier League January Transfer Signings: Best XI (PART ONE)

Many a manager and pundit have remarked that it can be very difficult to bring in top players during the January transfer window.

The winter market does lend itself to teams paying over the odds and making panic buys in order to rescue their seasons.

However, there has been the odd occasion where January deals have been very successful and it has led to the player becoming an excellent addition for their club.

Press the next page as we look at the goalkeeper and defenders in our best Premier League XI from signings made in January.

Asmir Begovic -GK -(Portsmouth to Stoke City – £3.25m – 2010)

The Bosnian’s move to the Bet365 Stadium proved to be an excellent piece of business for the Potters, as he went on to play 172 appearances over a five-and-a-half-year period.

Begovic won the club’s player of the season award in 2012/13 and he was sold on for a sizeable profit to Chelsea at the end of the 2014/15 campaign.

Seamus Coleman – RB (Sligo Rovers to Everton -£60k – 2009)

There is no doubt that the Irishman has proven to be excellent value for money, having arrived for a tiny fee from his home country in the middle of the 2008/09 season.

Coleman went on to captain the Toffees, and he has now accrued 366 appearances over the thirteen years he has spent at Goodison Park. The fullback is still going strong at 33 years of age.

Nemanja Vidic – CB ( Spartak Moscow to Manchester United – £7m – 2006)

Not much was known about the Serbian international when United signed him from Spartak Moscow but he was an outstanding purchase, considering what he went on to achieve.

Over eight seasons, Vidic won the Premier League on five separate occasions as well as lifting the Champions League, three League Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Virgil van Dijk – CB (Southampton to Liverpool – £75m – 2018)

Some questioned the transfer fee that the Reds paid for the Dutch international at the time but he proved to be a transformational signing for the Merseyside club.

Since van Dijk arrived at Anfield, Liverpool have reached two Champions League finals (winning one of them), lifted the Premier League title for the first time in 30 years, as well as winning the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Patrice Evra – LB (Monaco to Manchester United – £5.5m – 2006)

The Frenchman took a while to settle at Old Trafford but, after a difficult first six months, he became a firm fixture in United’s first team, going on to play 379 games over eight and a half years.

Evra has gone down as one of the best left-backs in Premier League history, having won five league titles during his spell in Manchester.
