Player Ratings: Manchester United 2-1 Leicester City

Manchester United got their season off to the perfect start with a 2-1 victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford.

Paul Pogba opened the scoring from the penalty spot after just three minutes when Foxes midfielder Daniel Amartey was penalised for a handball in the box.

Leicester came close to an equaliser twice in the first half through both Kelechi Iheanacho and James Maddison, however were punished for not taking there chances when Luke Shaw made it 2-0 with his first ever career goal late on in the second.

Jamie Vardy made for a tense finish when he headed home in injury time following a fortunate deflection off the goalpost, however United held on to claim victory.

Manchester United

David De Gea – 6
Made an excellent save from James Maddison’s effort in the first, but looked uncomfortable claiming set pieces and failed to deal with the cross that lead to Leicester’s late goal.

Matteo Darmian – 5
Was given a hard time by both Ben Chilwell and Demarai Gray. Antonio Valencia will be welcomed back with open arms.

Eric Bailly – 7
Excellent display from the Ivory Coast star, who was combative as ever and made some vital covering tackles to prevent Leicester causing damage in behind.

Victor Lindelof – 6
Looked more assured alongside Bailly than he did for all of last season.

Luke Shaw – 8
MAN OF THE MATCH. Scored his first ever United goal and ran up and down the left flank tremendously all night. Will have silenced many of his critics, including perhaps Jose Mourinho.

Andreas Pereira – 6
Solid display from the younger in holding midfield, however would have been nice to see him display his creative talents more often.

Fred – 7.5
United fans are going to love this lad. The Brazilian’s high energy, skill and eye for a pass are a recipe for success in the Premier League.

Paul Pogba – 6
Technically the best player on the field, however his impact on the game dwindled quickly as the game went on. Can be forgiven after a long summer with France.

Juan Mata – 5
Neat in possession but lacked the killer ball in the final third.

Marcus Rashford – 4
Poor. Failed to get involved and didn’t look interested.

Alexis Sanchez – 5
Frustratingly poor in the opposition half and gave the ball away too many times, however had plenty of energy and got in the right positions.

Substitutes
Romelu Lukaku (on for Rashford, 67) – 5
Spurned a great chance to make it 2-0 shortly after coming on.

Showed some neat touches and was confident in possession.
Marouane Fellaini (on for Pogba, 84) – N/A
