Ornstein Confirms United Did Consider Hijacking Chelsea’s Move For 60M Rated England U21 Ace

Manchester United did look into the possibility of signing Everton winger Anthony Gordon before agreeing a deal for Ajax’s Antony, according to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein.

The reliable journalist claims that the Red Devils “made a late check” on the England Under 21 international’s availability:

Chelsea were the team who were said to be favourites for Gordon’s signature. Manager Thomas Tuchel is believed to be a big fan of the player but Everton’s £60m valuation has led to the Blues stepping away.

It may have been the case that United were considering matching the 21-year-old’s asking price if their move for Antony collapsed in the final days of the transfer window.

However, with the Brazilian now poised to seal a €100m (£85m) move to Old Trafford, any potential interest in Gordon is likely to have cooled. It remains to be seen though whether Erik ten Hag’s side will try to sign anyone else ahead of Thursday’s deadline.
